The Story
The Verona is a 1906 Classical Revival apartment block, a four-story brick building erected in Springfield's North End streetcar neighborhood and built by Holyoke contractor Casper Ranger. It is a representative example of the modern multifamily housing that replaced single-family farmsteads as the district developed in the early 20th century, and it housed a continuous succession of the city's immigrants, from Russian Jews in the 1910s to Puerto Ricans in the 1950s and 1960s. It is listed both for its role in Springfield's growth (Criterion A) and as well-preserved work of a prominent local builder (Criterion C).
