The Story
The Calhoun Apartments is a four-story, L-shaped, yellow-brick Classical Revival apartment block with first-floor retail space in Springfield's North End, built in 1914 by the Home Realty Trust and designed by local architect and engineer James D. Long. It was built by a family of Russian Jewish immigrants during a period when Springfield's North End was being densely developed with masonry apartment blocks. The building is significant under National Register Criterion A for its association with the neighborhood's social history and Criterion C as a distinctive example of Long's work.
