Union Trust Company Building

The Union Trust Company Building at 1351 Main Street in Springfield was built in 1907-08 and designed by the nationally prominent Boston firm of Peabody and Stearns in the Beaux Arts style. Two stories with a mezzanine, its limestone facade is dominated by a monumental triumphal-arch motif framed by rusticated piers, with a full Corinthian entablature and sculpted spandrel figures by John Evans of Boston. The Union Trust Company was founded in 1906 through the merger of three banks and used the building as its headquarters until 1970. It is significant for its architecture, its associations with Springfield's banking history, and its role in the development of the city center, and has been called 'that gem of Main Street architecture.'
