Congress established an arsenal at Springfield in 1777, and George Washington chose the site in 1794 for the nation's first armory, where the hilltop grounds were walled and gated against the kind of seizure Daniel Shays's farmers had attempted in 1787. A guard house at the entrance controlled who passed onto Armory Square through the decades when the post was manufacturing small arms for the Union, and later for two world wars. The Department of Defense closed the armory in 1968 and the National Park Service took over the grounds ten years later.
