The Springfield Armory was the United States' first national armory, formally established by Congress in 1794 on a Springfield bluff that George Washington had chosen during the Revolution for its central location and river access. For nearly two centuries it was the principal maker of U.S. military small arms and a cradle of manufacturing innovation, pioneering interchangeable parts and assembly-line production before closing in 1968. The grounds, including the historic arsenal buildings, are now preserved as the Springfield Armory National Historic Site under the National Park Service and hold one of the world's largest collections of American firearms.
