The Story
The McIntosh Building at 158-164 Chestnut Street in Springfield was constructed in 1913 and is an outstanding local example of the Chicago style of commercial architecture, with wide bays featuring Chicago-style windows and pressed-metal spandrel panels between the stories and intact original storefronts. It was built by the McIntosh Shoe Company, described at the time as the oldest and largest inland boot and shoe jobbing house in the New England states, and was the firm's third downtown building as it continued to grow. It represents the continued commercial and manufacturing growth of downtown Springfield.
