Willys - Overland Block

The Willys-Overland Block at 151-157 Chestnut Street and 10-20 Winter Street in Springfield is a four-story, twelve-by-twelve-bay commercial block built in 1916, faced in buff-colored brick in a 20th-century Commercial style with grouped windows and decorative spandrel panels between stories, designed by the firm Mills, Rhines, Bellman & Nordhof. It originally housed an automobile salesroom, service station, and a 1,000-car garage for the Willys-Overland Company, then a leading automaker that by 1915 ranked second only to Ford; Springfield was chosen for a branch plant for its skilled craftsmen and standing as an automotive center. The building is significant under National Register Criteria A and C for its association with the city's growth as an automobile center, particularly the Chestnut Street/Apremont Triangle area, which transformed from residential to auto-related commercial use around 1915. It served as one of the city's largest commercial garages until the branch was discontinued in 1921. Part of the Downtown Springfield Multiple Resource Area.
