History

Chicopee City Hall at Market Square was designed by Boston architect Charles E. Parker and built in 1871, on land the city purchased from the Ames Manufacturing Company. Dedicated on December 21, 1871, the Italianate building is distinguished by a rose window and a 147-foot tower modeled on the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. Speakers at the hall over the years reportedly included Horace Mann, Charles Dickens and Frederick Douglass. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
