History
The Ames Manufacturing Company factory at 5-7 Springfield Street in Chicopee, whose oldest surviving buildings date to 1847, was the home of a nationally important maker of swords, tools, cutlery, and cast bronze and iron work. Brothers Nathan P. and James T. Ames moved their business to the Chicopee River in 1829, and the firm became one of the Union's most important suppliers of side arms, swords, and artillery during the Civil War. Its foundry also cast noted bronzes, including the doors of the U.S. Capitol's Senate wing and Daniel Chester French's Minute Man statue at Concord. The complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and its largest buildings have since been converted to residences.
