History
The Ames Manufacturing Company factory at 5-7 Springfield Street in Chicopee is a complex of connected brick industrial buildings, the oldest dating to 1847. The Ames brothers, Nathan P. and James T., moved their tool and cutlery business to the Chicopee River around 1829, and the company became one of the Union's most important makers of swords, side arms and heavy ordnance during the Civil War. Its foundry also cast notable bronzes, including Daniel Chester French's Minute Man statue at Concord and the bronze doors of the U.S. Capitol's Senate wing. The complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and its largest buildings have since been converted to housing.
