History

West Barnstable Cemetery on Meetinghouse Way dates to about 1712 and is one of the oldest burying grounds in the town of Barnstable, associated with the West Parish and its historic meetinghouse. It is a contributing property in a National Register historic district and is the burial place of members of the prominent Otis family, including Colonel James Otis Sr. (1702-1778), father of Revolutionary patriot James Otis Jr. and of historian Mercy Otis Warren.
