Parker, John W. B. House

A contributing property in the West Barnstable Village--Meetinghouse Way Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. Strung along Meetinghouse Way as a dispersed linear settlement, this district marks the traditional village center of West Barnstable, which took shape after a separate parish was established and its West Parish Meetinghouse was built in 1717. Most of its dwellings date from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, built by long-established farming families in sturdy, competently designed Federal and Greek Revival forms, while later non-residential buildings reflect changing needs. The arrival of the Cape Cod Branch Railroad in 1854 spurred new growth, and as farming declined the village turned to industries such as brickmaking and cranberry cultivation, drawing Finnish and Portuguese immigrants; the resulting mix of homes, meetinghouse, stores, school, library, and railroad depot presents a remarkably complete picture of village life.
