Sirna, Anthony and Allison Studio

The Anthony and Allison Sirna Studio is a compact, recreational cottage and art studio in a remote waterfront section of Wellfleet within the Cape Cod National Seashore, designed in the Modern style by architect Victor Civkin in 1960 and completed in 1961 by local builder Edward Whiting. It is a one-story, flat-roofed building of wood-frame construction on a concrete block foundation, notable for its convex, fully glazed facade wall that opens toward the Atlantic Ocean, a deep angled awning, and multi-colored flagstone flooring that continues from the interior onto an outdoor patio. It is significant under Criterion A in the areas of Recreation and Social History for its association with the postwar, progressive intellectual community that commissioned Modern-style vacation houses on the Outer Cape, and under Criterion C in Architecture as a distinctive late-career work of Victor Civkin, an Eastern European emigre architect and former General Electric chief architect who completed roughly 500 residential commissions. It is one of only a few Civkin works in Massachusetts and part of the Mid-Twentieth-Century Modern Residential Architecture on Outer Cape Cod Multiple Property listing. The Sirnas sold the studio to the National Park Service in 1974 while retaining a use-and-occupancy agreement.
