Kugel, Peter House

The Peter Kugel House at 188 Long Pond Road is a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired Modern-style vacation residence designed in 1970 by prolific local architect Charles (Charlie) Zehnder for Boston College professor Peter Kugel. Set into a wooded, sloping lot overlooking Northeast Pond within the Cape Cod National Seashore, the house is a sculptural composition of dramatically cantilevered, overlapping horizontal planes with a telescoping, ziggurat-like plan, built of concrete block clad partly in cedar clapboard under a flat tar-and-gravel roof. Its rooms are arranged around a central brick hearth in accordance with Wrightian design theory, with full-height glazing and butt-jointed corner windows dissolving the boundary between interior and landscape. Listed under Criteria A and C, it is significant for its association with the postwar community of progressive urban intellectuals who built Modern vacation homes on the Outer Cape and as a representative work of Zehnder, who designed roughly 40 such houses in the region; the Cape Cod Modern House Trust restored it in 2009.
