Rhodehouse, Nelson House

The Nelson Rhodehouse House at 131 Main Street in the Cotuit village of Barnstable is a sophisticated 1 1/2-story Greek Revival cottage built about 1858. It faces gable-end to the street, with its entry set in a recessed corner porch, and is flushboarded to simulate masonry; a broad entablature encircles the house, with corner pilasters, a raking cornice, and windows with wide surrounds and projecting lintels and sills. A barn attached by a shed sits at the rear, and a handsome wooden picket fence sets the property off. It meets Criterion C primarily for the high quality of its Greek Revival architecture. Housewright Charles L. Baxter built the house and in 1858 sold it to Nelson Rhodehouse, a mariner from Sandwich; during the Civil War Rhodehouse was among the Barnstable mariners captured by Confederate privateers, and the property remained in his family into the mid-20th century.
