History

This monument in Wellfleet marks the site where Guglielmo Marconi built one of the first transatlantic wireless stations. On January 18, 1903, from this South Wellfleet station, Marconi transmitted the first two-way wireless communication between the United States and Europe, an exchange of greetings between President Theodore Roosevelt and King Edward VII. The station's towers were later dismantled and much of the site has eroded into the sea; the location is now part of the Cape Cod National Seashore.
