The Story

Pond Hill School is a plain Greek Revival frame schoolhouse built in 1857 in South Wellfleet, the last of twelve district schoolhouses erected in Wellfleet and the town's earliest surviving schoolhouse to retain its original appearance. The two-story, three-bay building on a brick foundation was built on a shares basis by local Paine Hollow men at a cost of $1,646.87, using Maine lumber brought by schooner. It served as the neighborhood district school for twenty-three years, with a first-floor primary room and a second-floor 'Fisherman's School' that taught navigation to boys who fished in season. After closing in 1880 it was bought in 1888 by the Ladies Social Union and later housed a local library (from 1912) and the South Wellfleet Neighborhood Association, remaining a community focus. It was listed under Criteria A and C for education, architecture, and social history.

History

Wellfleet once maintained twelve district schoolhouses. This two-story frame building of 1857, put up for the town's third district, was the last of them built and the last to survive largely intact, replacing an older single-story one-room school on the same ground. In 1912 the upper floor was reworked to hold a library. The South Wellfleet Neighborhood Association occupies it today, and it was added to the National Register in March 1989.
