The Story

The Lot Crocker House at 284 Gosnold Street in Hyannis (Barnstable) is a full five-bay, one-and-a-half-story Cape Cod cottage in the Federal style, dating to the early 19th century. Distinctively, its gable roof is pierced by twin interior chimneys rather than the usual center chimney, and it has a transomed center entry, 6/6 sash, wood shingle sheathing, and a granite foundation, with a one-story shed-roof wing and a rose-covered picket fence. It was owned by Lot Crocker, a carpenter from Barnstable Village who established the first saltworks in Hyannis in 1802; the saltworks appear near the house on 19th-century maps, and the Crocker family retained ownership through the century. Significant for its associations with the development of Hyannis's saltmaking industry, its long ties to the Crocker family, and as an excellent example of a Federal-period Cape cottage, it meets Criteria A, B, and C and was listed as part of the Barnstable Multiple Resource Area.
