The Story
The Ebenezer Crocker Jr. House at 49 Putnam Avenue in Cotuit (Barnstable) is a late Georgian, two-and-a-half story gable-roofed house built about 1783 for Ebenezer Crocker (1751-1817), who served two terms in the state legislature. The estate passed through the Crocker, Hooper and Lowell families; Boston merchant Samuel Hooper became its first summer resident, and among many notable guests, Marian Hooper spent her honeymoon there with Henry Adams. It is significant as a fine piece of Georgian architecture set within a well-preserved rural farmstead with numerous historic outbuildings, and for its associations with those illustrious families and Cotuit's summer-resort history.
