History

Westfield State University traces its origins to a state normal school founded in 1839 by education reformer Horace Mann, established as one of the first public teacher-training schools in America and admitting students regardless of race, gender, or economic class. Originally the Barre Normal School, it relocated to Westfield in 1844 and became the Westfield Normal School, later the Westfield State Teachers College, then Westfield State College in 1961, and adopted its current name in 2010. Its athletic teams are known as the Owls.
