U. S. Post Office - Holyoke Main Branch

The Story

The Holyoke Main Post Office at 650 Dwight Street is a limestone Art Deco building constructed in 1933-34 at the northern edge of Holyoke's central business district. It was designed by George P. B. Alderman & Company of Holyoke and Thomas M. James & Company of Boston and built by the Tremaglio Brothers of Waterbury, Connecticut, and was styled after the Art Deco Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. The two-story central block with flanking one-story wings depends on proportion, stone jointing and shallow reveals rather than applied ornament, with carved eagles set above its two entrances. The lobby retains terrazzo floors, a marble wainscot, and a 1936 mural by Ross Moffett depicting a landing by early settlers. It was listed for architectural significance as a fine example of the Art Deco style.
