The Story

A contributing property in the Hampden Park Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. A designed park and surrounding city blocks in Holyoke that illustrate mid-19th-century industrial city planning, growing out of an 1848 plan that set public parks within a street grid intended for mill workers' homes, stores, churches, and civic buildings. The formally symmetrical park reflects later-19th-century landscape design ideals, while the buildings represent Gothic Revival, Italianate, Second Empire, Queen Anne, Classical, and Colonial Revival styles. The district is also significant as the site of Holyoke's first Roman Catholic parish, whose church, convents, schools, and charitable institutions served immigrant, largely Irish, populations. Its period of significance runs from 1848 to 1962.
