Swetland - Pease House

The Swetland-Pease House at 191 Pease Road in East Longmeadow is a Vernacular Federalist house believed to have been built about 1793 by farmer Benjamin Swetland, later flanked by two lateral wings added in the mid-to-late nineteenth century. The two-story timber-frame main house has a rectangular plan with a central chimney, rests on a dry-laid foundation of locally quarried red sandstone, and has a Doric-pilastered entry and 12/12 sash; an unusual detail is its kitchen fireplace built of local red sandstone, a feature with regional ties to the Connecticut vernacular tradition. In the nineteenth century the farm passed to the Pease family, most closely associated with the house, including Mervin Henry Pease (1860-1933), a schoolteacher, farmer, and town official. One of a small number of surviving eighteenth-century houses in East Longmeadow, it is an excellent example of Vernacular Federalist architecture.
