George Washington approved this bluff above the Connecticut River as an arsenal site in 1777 on Henry Knox's recommendation, Knox judging the plain above Springfield one of the most proper spots on every account. Shays' Regulators marched on the grounds in January 1787 hoping to seize the weapons stored here and were driven off with grapeshot, a confrontation that echoed through the Constitutional Convention months later. The open ground at the center of the post is ringed by arsenal buildings including the 1847 Main Arsenal, whose racked muskets moved Longfellow to write 'The Arsenal at Springfield' in 1843.
