The Story

The Thomas and Esther Smith House (also known as the Mathew Noble House) at 251 North West Street in the Feeding Hills section of Agawam is a vernacular Georgian-style house with a gambrel roof that ends in a modest kick eave, three bays wide and two deep on a center-chimney, four-room plan common in the Connecticut River valley during the Georgian period (roughly 1750-1776). It is built of plank-frame construction, with wide vertical planks between the post-and-beam framing members, and its principal-rafter upper roof retains hewn, pinned joints marked with scribe-rule numbers. A notable feature is the Georgian double-leaf main entry door with feathered raised panels and integral transom lights, a form found in high-style Connecticut River valley doorways of the 1750s to the Revolution; window sash spanning the Georgian and Federal periods survives. It meets National Register criterion C for its distinctive construction and design.
