Fowler, Landlord Tavern

The Landlord Fowler Tavern at 171 Main Street in Westfield is a three-story, gambrel-roofed timber-frame building generally dated to 1761, when Daniel Fowler was licensed to open a tavern (the structure may be somewhat earlier). Fowler served on the local Committee of Correspondence, Inspection and Safety, which met at the tavern, and the militia mustered there during the Revolution. It lodged travelers along the Post Road until about 1830 and later became a residence; carefully restored in the 20th century, it is an excellent example of 18th-century Connecticut Valley design, and its entry reproduces an original doorway removed to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1916. It meets Criteria A and C of the National Register.
