Munson, Thurston Local Historic District

The Apremont Triangle Historic District in downtown Springfield centers on a small triangular park and the six early-twentieth-century buildings that frame it, forming one of the few public open spaces in the downtown. The park was created in 1924 when nearby streets were realigned, and it was dedicated as a World War I memorial named for the Battle of Apremont, France; a bronze plaque on a granite slab commemorates the battle. The surrounding buildings were designed to harmonize in scale and massing, and include the grand 1910 Renaissance Revival Hotel Kimball, the Classical Revival YMCA Building, the Gothic-detailed Tarbell-Waters Building, and a group of matching commercial blocks (Birnie, Harris and Green) by the Samuel M. Green Company. In the 1920s the district became a hub of automobile-related commerce, with showrooms including Rolls-Royce of America occupying the ground floors, and it was listed under National Register Criterion C as part of the Downtown Springfield Multiple Resource Area.
