The Story

A contributing property in the Quadrangle-Mattoon Street Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. A three-block hilltop district in Springfield combining the Quadrangle, the Elliot Street area, and the Mattoon Street area, containing buildings from every era of the city's history from 1811 onward. It holds notable 19th- and early-20th-century domestic and institutional architecture, from Mansard, Gothic Revival, and Queen Anne dwellings to the museums, Carnegie-funded Central Library, and churches grouped around the Quadrangle green, with work by architects including H. H. Richardson, James Renwick, and Asher Benjamin. The district is significant for this architectural range and as the cultural center of Springfield, set within one of the most distinctive urban open spaces of its kind in Massachusetts.
