Hubbard Block

The Hubbard Block (463-471 State Street, Springfield) is a three-story brick commercial building with a pitched roof, part of the National Register-listed Gunn and Hubbard Blocks located opposite the Springfield Armory at the corner of State and Walnut Streets. It was built circa 1835 as an investment by Asahel Hubbard, an inspector of arms at the Armory, and adjoins the similar Gunn Block by a fire wall. The blocks are significant under commerce and architecture as the commercial center of Springfield's 'Hill' area, whose growth was spurred by the U.S. Armory, and as among the only three masonry blocks surviving from the early 19th century in the city. A prominent early tenant of the Hubbard Block was Jonathan Bangs, who operated a flour and grain retail outlet there.
