Gunn Block Local Historic District

The Gunn Block at 473-477 State Street, Springfield, is a three-story brick commercial building built circa 1830 to house the flourishing 'West Indies Goods' trade (coffee, rum, molasses, sugar, and spices) of merchant Elisha Gunn; it adjoins the similar Hubbard Block (c. 1835), built as an investment by Armory arms inspector Asahel Hubbard. Located directly opposite the Springfield Armory, the block's second-floor 'Gunn's Hall' hosted meetings of the Hampden Lodge of Freemasons and Armory workers. It is significant for commerce and architecture as a center of trade for Springfield's 'Hill' area and as one of only three masonry blocks surviving from the city's early 19th century.
