The Story

The Connecticut Valley Historical Museum occupies the William Pynchon Memorial Building, a Colonial Revival granite structure built in 1927 at Springfield's Quadrangle and designed by local architect Max Westhoff, its facade modeled on the Colonial-era homes of the Connecticut River Valley. It houses the collections of the Connecticut Valley Historical Society (incorporated 1876), documenting regional history and genealogy, and formally joined the Springfield Museums association in 1948.

History

The Connecticut Valley Historical Museum in Springfield was housed in the William Pynchon Memorial Building, a Colonial Revival structure erected in 1927 and named for the city's founder to hold the collections of the Connecticut Valley Historical Society. Designed by Springfield architect Max Westhoff, it gathered natural, civil, military, literary, ecclesiastical, and genealogical materials that had previously been stored at the City Library. The building is part of the Springfield Museums quadrangle and, since 2017, houses The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum.
