The places that make Massachusetts, Massachusetts.

The Story

A contributing property in the Upper Worthington Historic District (Boundary Increase), listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. This district forms one of Springfield's largest and most cohesive early-20th-century apartment neighborhoods, developed on the former Kibbe Estate largely by the prolific firm of Gagnier & Angers between about 1908 and 1929. It consists chiefly of four-story brick apartment blocks in the Georgian Revival style, unified by consistent setbacks, landscaped buffers, similar scale and massing, and common detailing such as splayed lintels, keystones, and columned entrance porticoes. The neighborhood combined real-estate speculation with the planning and design strategies of the day to create an attractive urban residential district, and it also reflects Springfield's growth as an automotive center through associated early brick garages.
