Located on Armory Hill just east of downtown Springfield, this district is one of the city's largest and most cohesive early 20th-century apartment neighborhoods, built between about 1908 and 1929 in response to the city's commercial and industrial growth. It consists almost entirely of four-story brick multiple-unit tenement blocks, predominantly Georgian Revival with some Jacobethan and Tudor Revival examples, unified by consistent scale, massing and materials and set along landscaped, tree-lined streets including the gently curving Summit Street. Most of the buildings were designed and built by the prolific French-Canadian firm of Gagnier and Angers, whose work contributed to Springfield's reputation as the "City of Homes."
