History

The Chapin School is a former public school building at 40 Meadow Street in the Willimansett area of Chicopee. Built in 1899 to a Classical Revival design by Holyoke architect George P. B. Alderman and enlarged over the next 15 years, it was named for the area's first English settlers, Jophet and Henry Chapin. It grew to become the city's largest school and served until 1995. Converted into residences for homeless veterans, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.
