MassachusettsThe Carreau Block at 640-642 Chicopee Street in Chicopee is a large, L-shaped, three-story brick Classical Revival apartment building constructed in 1911-12 by the French-Canadian builders Louis Carreau & Son. Its facades feature undulating paired bow windows, Classical entrances with fluted pilasters and swagged door hoods, and contrasting bands of reddish-brown and yellow brick and concrete delineating each story. Built to house industrial workers in Chicopee's Willimansett neighborhood following the 1893 Connecticut River bridge and 1895 streetcar lines to Holyoke, it is significant under Criteria A and C as a well-preserved example of Classical Revival multifamily housing and for its association with the area's development and French-Canadian heritage.

The Carreau Block at 640-642 Chicopee Street in the Willimansett neighborhood of Chicopee is a three-story brick Classical Revival apartment building erected in 1912 by Louis Carreau, a locally prominent builder of French Canadian descent. It is his only known surviving masonry building of this type, distinguished by undulating rounded window bays at the corner and entrances and bands of contrasting yellow brick. It was built as Willimansett grew rapidly to house workers for the industries of nearby Holyoke, and many of its early residents shared its builder's French Canadian heritage. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.
