History

This building in Hampden is associated with Thornton W. Burgess (1874-1965), the prolific children's author and conservationist who made his home in the town. A native of Sandwich on Cape Cod, Burgess wrote more than 170 books and some 15,000 daily newspaper stories, creating beloved characters such as Peter Rabbit, Reddy Fox, and Old Mother West Wind. He was also an active conservationist who promoted wildlife protection through his writing and a long-running radio program. After his death, the Massachusetts Audubon Society acquired his Hampden property and established the Laughing Brook Wildlife Sanctuary there.
