History

The Thornton W. Burgess House at 789 Main Street in Hampden is a vernacular house built about 1780-1784 by Calvin Stebbins, a descendant of one of the town's first settlers. It later became the home of the beloved children's author Thornton W. Burgess, who bought it in 1928 and lived there until his death, writing many of his nature stories in a studio in one of the outbuildings. Burgess wrote more than 170 books and thousands of newspaper stories over his career. The property is now owned by the Massachusetts Audubon Society, and the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
