The Story
The West Schoolhouse, also known as the Dennis Schoolhouse, is a one-story, one-room shingled schoolhouse built about 1770-1775 by N. Stone and is the oldest school in Dennis. It served as a one-room district school until 1867, when the district schools were consolidated. Notable for its construction, it retains an original hip-roof structure (later covered by a ridge roof) and rare 'dragon beam' corner bracing peculiar to the area. Threatened with demolition, it was moved in 1974 onto the grounds of the Josiah Dennis Manse to be preserved as an educational museum.
