Dennis, Josiah Manse

The Josiah Dennis Manse was built in 1736 and is a good example of the New England saltbox vernacular, a two-and-a-half story shingled house five bays wide with a central chimney and a paneled entrance framed by pilasters and a five-light transom. It was the home of the Reverend Josiah Dennis, the Harvard-educated first minister of the east precinct of Yarmouth, who served the parish from his ordination until his death in 1763; when the precinct became an independent town in 1793 it was named Dennis in his honor. The house remained in the same family into the twentieth century and is now owned by the town and maintained as a museum.
