The Story

The Barzillai Weeks House, built in 1799 on the southwest side of Scorton Hill in West Barnstable, is a well-preserved full five-bay, one-and-a-half-story Federal-period Cape cottage with a central chimney, wood-shingle exterior, and a surviving barn. The Weeks family owned the roughly 35-acre property for about 150 years, from 1795 to 1956. The land is believed to have earlier belonged to Captain John and Mary Percival, parents of the noted naval officer Captain "Mad Jack" John Percival. The house fronts High Street, historically the Post Road and a stagecoach route.

History

Barzillai Weeks built this one-and-a-half-story Cape in the West Barnstable village, and the house anchored a working farm for more than 150 years, most of that time under his own descendants. Its Federal detailing survives unusually well, nowhere more clearly than in the five-pane transom above the front door. The National Register listed it on March 13, 1987.
