This marker recalls the Reverend Samuel Treat (1648-1716), the first ordained minister of Eastham, who began preaching there in 1672 and served the parish for more than four decades until his death. A Harvard graduate and son of a Connecticut governor, Treat ministered to both English settlers and the local Nauset people, learning their Algonquian language and translating religious texts so that Native preachers could use them. He was widely respected among the Nauset, whose praying congregation numbered in the hundreds, and tradition holds that they bore his body to the meetinghouse through deep snow when he died.
