This roughly 100-acre rural district in Eastham, within Cape Cod National Seashore, preserves a landscape of fields, woods and salt marsh grouped around the Knowles and Penniman houses that represents a pattern of Cape Cod farm settlement and land division from about 1750 to 1900. It reflects the regional shift away from communally worked open fields toward clusters of extended families jointly farming adjacent, individually held parcels, an organization that endured on the Knowles family holdings from 1786 until 1943. Portions overlap the Nauset Archaeological District (a National Historic Landmark for Historic Contact-period significance), and the Second Empire Captain Edward Penniman House and barn, the only whaling captain's house in Eastham, stand within its bounds.
