Richardson, John House

The John Richardson House at 242 Phinneys Lane in the Centerville section of Barnstable is a well-preserved Federal-period three-quarter Cape cottage built about 1795. Rising one and a half stories to a gable roof with entry and chimney set one bay in from the north end, minimal trim, and six-over-six sash, it is extended by a rear ell and retains its barn. It was built by John Richardson, a Harvard student who came to teach at the Phinneys Lane School in 1795, and remains the only house in Centerville still owned by the original family; significant as a remnant of the village's original settlement center, it meets Criteria A, B, and C.
