History
The Old Harbor Life-Saving Station was built in 1897 near the entrance to Chatham Harbor for the United States Life-Saving Service, and is one of the best-preserved examples of its building type on the American coast. It operated until the Coast Guard decommissioned it in 1944. In 1977, with the Chatham shoreline eroding, the National Park Service moved the station by barge more than thirty miles north to Race Point Beach in Provincetown, where it is preserved as a museum within the Cape Cod National Seashore.
