The Story

A contributing property in the Dune Shacks of Peaked Hill Bars Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. This roughly 1,960-acre oceanfront cultural landscape occupies the wild 'back shore' of Provincetown and Truro on outer Cape Cod, now within the Cape Cod National Seashore. Scattered among shifting coastal sand dunes are some eighteen rustic wood shacks, built mostly between the 1920s and early 1950s, that served as informal seasonal retreats for recreation, solitude, and creative work, drawing writers and artists including figures associated with playwright Eugene O'Neill. Sheltered from the tourism that developed on the harbor side, the district preserves more than five miles of undeveloped coastline and a spare maritime building tradition. It is significant as a distinctive dune landscape embodying the rustic character and inspirational serenity that made the back shore a haven for twentieth-century artistic life.
