Hawthorne Class Studio

The Hawthorne Class Studio (later the Morris Davidson School of Art) is located off Miller Hill Road in Provincetown. It is a barn-like, shingled class studio with a gambrel roof, measuring about 50 by 80 feet and set on cement-block pilings, constructed between 1900 and 1907 and remaining essentially unaltered; a house that was moved to the site accompanies it. The studio is significant for its association with the noted painter Charles W. Hawthorne, recognized as the founder of the Provincetown art community and its leading figure until his death in 1930, and for its continuous use as an art school for some 70 years. World-famous artist and instructor Hans Hofmann taught there from 1930 to 1945, and painter and teacher Morris Davidson acquired the property in 1945 and ran the painting school for decades. It is significant under Art and Education.
