Partly of fireproof construction (steel frame, terracotta block, and concrete floors) finished in stucco with cast-stone and wood trim under a complex red-slate hip roof, it is primarily Arts and Crafts in style with an eclectic mix of neo-Renaissance and Classical Revival details and exceptionally fine paneled interiors. It was built for Adeline Nickerson, widow of Roland Nickerson, by Samuel Mayo Nickerson, founder and president of the First National Bank of Chicago, on the site of an earlier 1890 summer house (The Pines) that burned in 1906. The estate, which includes an 1890/1906 carriage house, meets National Register Criteria B and C for its association with the Nickerson family and as a well-designed early 20th-century Arts and Crafts summer residence.

The Nickerson Mansion in Brewster stands on the site of Fieldstone Hall, a summer retreat that Chicago financier Samuel Mayo Nickerson built in 1890 for his ailing son Roland. After that house burned in a 1906 cellar fire, Roland's widow Addie and Samuel rebuilt on the original foundation in 1907, this time in steel-reinforced concrete faced with stucco to be nearly fireproof, with 16 rooms, Italian marble fireplaces, and woodwork carved by Italian craftsmen. In 1934 Addie Nickerson donated roughly 1,700 acres to the Commonwealth, creating Nickerson State Park, and the mansion today anchors the Ocean Edge Resort.
