The Story
The Carriage House of the Nickerson estate in Brewster is a one-and-a-half story building of mixed wood-frame and masonry construction, built in three stages in 1890, 1906, and about 1940. Its original 1890 west end features cobbled fieldstone and rock-faced granite, while the 1906 additions were stuccoed to match the adjacent Nickerson Mansion and given a three-story water tower with a copper-finialed roof. It is part of the summer estate of Samuel Mayo Nickerson, a Chicago banker; the main mansion, Fieldstone Hall, was designed by the Boston firm of Chapman & Frazer and completed in 1908 in the Arts and Crafts style.
