History
Lothrop Hill Cemetery, on Main Street (Route 6A) in Barnstable, is one of the oldest burial grounds on Cape Cod and takes its name from the Rev. John Lothropp, the English-born minister who led the first English settlers to Barnstable in 1639 and was himself buried here at his death in 1653. Many of the earliest graves are unmarked while the oldest legible stones date to the 1680s, and the cemetery is a contributing property in a National Register historic district.
