History
Lothrop Hill Cemetery in Barnstable dates to about 1653 and is a contributing property in a National Register historic district, making it one of the oldest burying grounds on Cape Cod. It is the resting place of the Reverend John Lothrop (1584-1653), the English-born Congregational minister who led his followers to settle Barnstable in 1639, and of many of the town's founding families. Its early slate stones, carved with the winged death's-heads typical of colonial New England, record the first generations of the settlement.
